Our bodies are 18 to 20 percent protein. They create hundreds of thousands of proteins from approximately 20 amino acids. Specialized protein molecules made from various arrangements of amino acid groupings are at work in our cells at all times. Amino acids are called the building blocks of proteins. Proteins are called the building blocks of our bodies.
Proteins are large, complex molecules made of amino acid chains called polypeptides. A protein molecule consists of one or more polypeptides. Most are complicated shapes in various arrangements of up to 22 amino acid polypeptides, including eight to ten essential amino acids - otherwise known as EAA.
