A descendant of the Bethunes of Skye, traditional physicians to the Court of Scotland, John Bethune was educated at King's College, Aberdeen. He was ordained and emigrated in 1773 with his mother Christian to Anson County in North Carolina where they lived in the same place as the Jacobite heroine Flora MacDonald and her husband Allan of Kingsburgh. Captured as a Loyalist at the battle of Widow Moore's Creek Bridge in 1776, Bethune was released from prison and became regimental chaplain of the 84th Highland Emigrants.
