A somewhat unusual book crossed my desk recently, written by a naval Korean War veteran, Sydney Thompson. Thompson has written the book in the verbal past conditional tense, which makes it little hard to get into at first (e.g. "the sailor would have turned to his friend and said ...") which begs the question "did he, or didn't he?"
