Some 1400 Canadians became involved in the Spanish Civil War, and half of them never returned. Depending on one's perspective, the presence of Canadians in Spain was a brief glimpse of supreme heroism, a national embarrassment, or damn foolishness. Little of a historical nature has been written in Canada on the subject (which only becomes more confusing with each passing decade), but somehow the labels and name-calling have survived.
