Between 18 to 21 March 1997, an Auxiliary Security Force exercise (formerly known as a Base Defence Force exercise) was conducted in the National Capital region (including MGen Pearkes Bldg, Bldg 469 - Uplands Site - and CFS Leitrim.) This ASF exercise, called EX TRYOUT, was supposed to last a week, but it was cut short because our servicemen and women had nothing to do. First, it was decided not to wear combat clothes or equipment. Then it was decided that the servicemen and women on this military exercise should not be issued with personal weapons, nor radios.
