In free societies, wrote George Orwell, `unpopular ideas can be silenced, and inconvenient facts kept dark, without any need for any official ban'. One of the least discussed, some would say most suppressed issues of the contemporary world is the part played by the media in promoting the ideology and propaganda of Western power.
