One of the greatest mysteries of WWII is how German fighter pilots like Erich Hartmann scored 352 victories. He was one of two aces who topped 300 victories while 15 had more than 200 and 107 pilots scored more than 100 tallies. A mere 83 pilots destroyed 3036 allied aircraft, while on the allied side Russian Ivan Kozhedub was top gun with 62 victories and Marmaduke Pattle (SAAF) had an unofficial 51. (Although the RAF only credits Pattle with 41 victories, squadron records were lost in Crete and there is strong evidence that he downed 51.)
