Years ago a Catholic mother of four children described her job to me as a "life sentence." In playgrounds, shopping malls, waiting rooms and in myself, I see evidence of an epidemic of the faulty parenting her simple statement evinced. Our personal defects aside, this attitude arises from the prevalent notion of parenthood as the job of preserving character, not forming it. The practical effect of this erroneous notion is that we rely on the passage of time to bring children to adulthood.
