We are used to the life stories of famous entertainers--four or five spouses, together with other company on occasion; addiction to alcohol; flirtation with drugs; in fact disorderly and messy lives. The life of Alex Guiness is orderly and disciplined. He has had one wife, Merula, whom he married in 1938. They live near Petersfield, Hampshire, where they engage in such simple activities as watching the birds, watching the garden grow, and visiting a farmer's market, from which they come back "loaded with good bread (disastrously irresistible when new), beef tomatoes that actually taste like tomatoes, spring onions, pickles and marvellous coffee ice-cream."
