When the Young Turks deposed the Sultan in 1909, they set up a tug-of-war between British and German military advisors and where, for the next five years the Germans had a harder tug. Britain rejected overtures for an alliance with Turkey, and two days before Britain served the ultimatum of war on Germany in 1914, an alliance was formed between Germany and Turkey against Russia. That same day, Winston Churchill, the First Lord of the Admiralty, advised the Turks that two warships which they had ordered from England would not be delivered as originally planned, a decision which drove the Turks closer to a partnership with Germany.
