It sounds like a B-grade plot from a 1950s science-fiction or horror flick, but it happened, says B.C. farmer Russell Jervis. He owns the farm where millions of tiny spiders recently created a monster web covering 60 acres. Scientists are puzzled over what the phenomenon means, and whether it could even be good news.

Mr. Jervis, 84, lives on a McBride area farm, bisected by the Yellowhead Highway, about 125 miles southeast of Prince George. He first realized that something strange was happening when he ran into some friends in town October 8. "They told me that I had hoarfrost on my field, and there wasn't any on theirs," he says.
