Scandinavia has a very conflicted relationship with the European Union; this is perhaps best illustrated by the very cantankerous debate about whether to join the single currency that took place in Denmark just last September. The work of Danish bad boy Lars von Trier bears the mark of these unresolved debates about unification and community. It may seem absurd to argue that von Trier's loopy, unstable films are really about such dry policy changes as a unified currency, relaxed tariffs and more open immigration, and I'd gladly admit that the European Union is not central in any of his films.
