An Ontario woman has been given the green light by the Ontario Court of Justice to represent Canadians in a lawsuit against the French manufacturer of a diet drug called Ponderal. Sheila Wilson took the drug in 1995 and 1996. In 1998, she became acutely ill with primary pulmonary hypertension, an often-fatal disease with no cure. She related her illness to the drug. The drug company argued that her case was frivolous and should be thrown out of court and, alternatively, that the trial should be held in France and a class action should not be allowed.
