DRIVING ALONG THE NARROW, TWISTED STREETS OF Twillingate, a scenic fishing village on New-foundland's north-east shore, you are far more likely to hear a reel from a rusty button accordion than a chorus by Verdi or Wagner. Despite its isolation, however, the small town produced a singer in the late 1800s whose career would carry her much further than the skippers who sailed north to fish the Labrador coast.
