This stimulating volume grew out of a conference on Mavis Gallant held at the Canadian Cultural Centre in Paris. The author herself was present, and a most attractive feature of the book is that, in addition to four scholarly papers, it offers Gallant's own responses to questions, as well as an extended conversation with Gallant's French translators (Pierre-Edmond Robert and Genevieve Doze) about the problems of rendering Gallant's work into French.
