NEW YORK -- William R. Chaney was named chairman Thurday of Tiffany & Co., a division of Avon Products, Inc., in a move underscoring an increased focus by Avon on a business that has drawn criticism in recent months.
Chaney succeeds David W. Mitchell, who retired Jan. 1 as Tiffany chairman and also as chairman of Avon.
Mitchell had held the Tiffany post since Walter Hoving, who sold the store to Avon in 1979, resigned Dec. 31, 1980.
Chaney had had group responsibility for Tiffany since 1980, when he was named president of the direct mail and specialty retailing division. Now, as chairman, he has taken charge of the store he has been ...
