GARY HART has been running slightly to Walter Mondale's right on economic issues. This is fine with Mondale, who accuses his opponent of being a tool of Big Oil and the AMA. For some reason this enabled Hart to run stronger in "liberal" Massachusetts than in "conservative" Alabama.
Mondale's attacks are enough to make you hope that Hart might have shed his old McGovernite views on economics. Alas, between the old Hart and the new there's only a pence' worth of difference. And even when he takes a sensible position, his loyalty to it is questionable.
