Sometime in early August, the eyes of the world will focus on a lone American athlete poised at the end of a long runway on the floor of the Los Angeles Coliseum. For a moment, perhaps contemplating the magnitude of his task, Carl Lewis will coil and rock slowly to and fro as he prepares to challenge one of track and field's most revered records.
