Q Dr. Schwartz, now that warm-weather insects are here again, how serious is the problem of insect stings?
A Insect-sting allergies are a very significant problem. Approximately 100 people die of insect stings in the U.S. each year. We suspect the toll may be higher, but because a sting reaction is not a reportable cause of death, many physicians don't consider it when a person dies suddenly outdoors. The cause of death is often listed as a heart attack or "natural causes."
