The banner year for automobile sales pales beside that for vans and recreational vehicles.

Assembly lines and customizing shops are churning out motor homes, travel trailers and converted vans in record numbers this spring. Despite prices of $35,000 for typical motor homes, dealers report waiting lists for many popular models.

"People have had some pressure years, and now they're ready for some fun," says Fran Van Pelt, a dealer in Aurora, Ill. "Last year was our best sales year ever, and this year is going to be even better."
