JONATHAN DEMME'S Swing Shift is also primarily about nostalgia for the Forties and, especially, the movies of that period. Here, however, there is the glimmer of a theme, for we are dealing with women in defense jobs, viewed as the first step in raising feminine consciousness in America. Or so it would seem, for the movie flounders and fudges, staggers and fumbles all over the place.
