PARIS -- Armed with a paint box of the brightest colors in seasons, and a wicked eye for dangerous curves, the French couturiers set out to paint a splashy portrait of a new feminine ideal in the shows that opened Monday. If the portrait is not easy to execute and has yet to be realized with anything approaching perfection, there's something new, sexy and exciting going on, and nearly everyone seems ardently focused on the same direction.
The new French femme -- as the shows have already demonstrated repeatedly -- is all woman, sporting a cinched waist, hip-hugging skirts, curvy short jackets and, for night, jewels and embroidery to dazzle a Midas. ...
