NEW YORK, Aug. 6 /PRNewswire/ -- Phelps Dodge Corporation announced today that it will suspend copper production from its New Cornelia branch mine and concentrator at Ajo, Ariz. effective Sunday, Aug. 12. The smelter at Ajo will continue to operate, treating material from Phelps Dodge's other mines at Morenci, Ariz. and Tyrone, N.M.
The company said that it was hopeful that the price of copper would improve sufficiently in the coming months to permit an early resumption of operations.
