Q Secretary Wolfowitz, do you share the view of those who see the next hundred years as "the Pacific century" in terms of American interests?
A I certainly agree with those--such as our ambassador to Japan, Mike Mansfield; Secretary Shultz, and, indeed, President Reagan--who stress the importance and enormous future potential of the area. That judgment is based on many factors but most of all on the dramatic economic growth in the Pacific region in recent years. That growth has led to a huge expansion in U.S. trade with the countries on the Pacifc rim. East Asian and southern Pacific countries alone now account for 30 percent of our foreign trade.
