Article: Shipments of M-MF up in half. (man-made fibers industry)

NEW YORK -- Shipments of man-made fibers by U.S. producers rose a modest 2.3 per cent in the first half of this year, but inventories jumped 24.6 per cent compared with the same period of 1983, according to the latest tabulation of Textile Economics Bureau.

The buildup of inventories reflected the fact that while shipments gained only 90.2 million pounds in this period to 4.077 billion pounds from 3.987 billion, production increased at a higher rate, as capacity utilization held in a narrow range of 82.3 per cent to 85.4 per cent in the latest half-year, compared with a low of 66.2 per cent to a high of 86 per cent a year ago.
