A new over-the-counter (OTC) drug for minor aches and pains has come on the market recently. Sold under two trade names, Nuprin and Advil, the drug is a lower dosage strength of a widely used prescription drug, ibuprofen. (Trade names of the prescription forms are Motrin and Rufen.)
The first new OTC painkiller in more than 25 years, ibuprofen may be used for the temporary relief of minor aches and pains associated with the common cold, headache, toothache, muscular aches and backache. The OTC versions also will be labeled for relieving the minor pain of arthritis and the pain of menstrual cramps and for reducing fever.
