ALL THE Mondale campaign needed was a Watergate. Suddenly the "sleaze factor" is enveloping the party that wanted a special prosecutor to investigate Ed Meese's cufflinks.
As we go to press, Geraldine Ferraro has withdrawn her promise to release her husband's tax returns. She may have to release the substance of them anyway: The Washington Legal Foundation has challenged her exemption from the usual congressional disclosure requirements, since she appears to have knowledge of her spouse's business affairs (as secretary-treasurer of his company) and to profit from them (as stockholder).
