NEW YORK, Sept. 21 /PRNewswire/ -- Brunei Darussalam was admitted today to the United Nations at the 39th session of the General Assembly. The Islamic Sultanate thus becomes the 159th member of that world body.

Brunei Darussalam's ruler -- His Majesty Sultan Hassanal Bolkiah Mu'izzaddin Waddaulah -- formally accepted his country's induction with an address to the 39th session of the General Assembly.

In his remarks, Sultan Bolkiah noted that the effectiveness of the United Nations depends on its member states. He pledged to support the principles of the U.N. Charter and the collective security system which the world body represents.
