The designer had signed the day before a letter of intent with Playtex, Inc., to regain ownership of his made-to0order and high-price ready-to-wear business, which he sold to Norton Simon, Inc., in 1973. Play-tex, a subsidiary of Beatrice Cos., will keep control of the Halston fragrances as well as the contract Halston signed with J.C. Penney in 1983 for a cheaper Halston III line.
