WHO WOULD have guessed that the "single issue" of abortion would turn out to be nearly the central issue of the 1984 campaign? Again and again the liberals have tried to dismiss or derogate it; but it keeps coming back. It has made Gerry Ferraro's campaign a shambles: Wherever she goes, anti-abortion protestors are there to remind everyone of her grisly position. Though "personally opposed," she has said she would give her own daughter money to pay for the abortion of her grandchild. The absurdity of this stance was caught once and for all in John Lofton's quip that Teddy Kennedy's religion "is so private he won't even impose it on himself."
