THE CYPRUS QUESTION
THIS YEAR THE island of Cyprus observed two tenth anniversaries: the anniversary of the coup, led by Greek army officers, that overthrew the government of Archbishop Makarios, and the anniversary of the invasion, five days later, of the island by the Turkish army. Though the fighting following that invasion lasted only a few days, it was long enough for Turkish Cypriots, who make up 18 per cent of the island's population, to increase the area under their control to more than a third of the island. In the years since, though many bitter words have been volleyed back and forth between the two sides, nothing much has changed on Cyprus.
