NEW YORK -- J.C. Penney Co., according to reports circulating Monday, has joined the bidding to acquire Halston Enter-prises from the International Playtex division of Beatrice Cos., adding another twist to the Halston saga.
If a deal is consummated, Penney's, which signed a six-year contract with Halston Enterprises in 1983 to produce and sell a Halston III line of women's men's and children's moderate-price apparel, would gain ownership of Halston's made-to-order and high-price ready-to-wear businesses, as well as numerous licensing deals. The deal would presumably exclude the Halston-Orlane fragrance business which is another division of Playtex.
