A CLASSIC HISTORICAL argument goes on about the importance of individuals in history versus the importance of larger historical forces and patterns. It is of course an argument that cannot be finally resolved one way or the other, and must be taken up case by case. Did Rome produce Caesar, or did Caesar produce Rome?
Much will now be said of Mondale's defects as a candidate, and there will be speculation about the supposed strengths of Gary Hart, Mario Cuomo, Bill Bradley, and others.
