IGNORING THE PAST
BOOKS HAVE HAD a share in the shaping of my mind along with the school of life and the lessons of history. One book has colored my thinking to a considerable degree, the Meditations of Marcus Aurelius, the philosopher-emperor.
I love the splendid beginning of Book I, in which Marcus Aurelius cites the persons from whom he received his education in values:
