Who won in the Sharon libel trial? Time magazine did not win. It was found guilty of publishing a false and defamatory paragraph saying that Israel's Gen. Ariel Sharon had on Sept. 15, 1982, discussed with Phalangists in Lebanon the need to revenge the assassination of the President-elect, Bashir Gemayel. That was the day before the Phalangists massacred hundreds of Palestinian civilians, a massacre for which an official inquiry said General Sharon bore "indirect responsibility."
