WASHINGTON -- The Defense Department plans to use the initial production from Union Oil Co.'s Phase I oil shale project to supply two Air Force bases with jet fuel and two Army bases with diesel fuel to see how well the distilled products work.
William Sharkey, acting deputy assistant secretary of defense for logistics, told a Synthetic Fuels Corp. board meeting Tuesday that a test of the refined shale products would supply 100 percent of the bases' needs for the test period, although normally the fuel would be blended with other stocks.
Sharkey said the department wanted to examine the shale products' capability under a worstcase scenario.
