New groomed trails and a herd of elk add to the pleasure of ski touring around Steamboat Springs, in north central Colorado. The Touring Center offers 20 kilometers of tracks, from gentle beginner to steep advanced terrain, all set in the broad valley abutting the Park Range and Elkhead Mountains. Recently, a herd of 200 elk has been browsing near the track area; you're likely to see them before 10:30 in the morning or after 3 P.M.
