WITH THEIR existence threatened by product imports, low demand and federal regulations, domestic refiners look to efficiency-raising technology for solutions to survival.
Profits have been meager, refining margins paper-thin, and optimism minimal. In this light, some refiners are upgrading, and others are building new efficiencies into plants through high-technology instrumentation and equipment.
Sun Co. Inc.'s Sun Refining and Marketing Co., for example, is building a new control room and upgrading its process instrumentation as part of a $70 million plant "revitatization" program at its Toledo refinery.
