On June 21, 1985, my husband Dale and I presented the oceanographic and meteorological briefing at Newport, R.I., for the biennial Newport to Bermuda Race. My oceanographic preparations for this event, intense and extensive, had begun months before. Telephone calls to my office had increased in frequency as far back as February, as race entrants requested inclusion on the Gulf Stream Mailing List--the daily Oceanographic Analyses generated from thermal infrared satellite images by the National Weather Service (NWS) of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA).
