The power and glory of Turkey's past is evident after one leaves Istanbul's new international airport and passes the architectural marvels en route to the city's heart. Shades of Constantine the Great remain in the crumbling remains of Hadrian's Wall and the basilica of Saint Sophia, which Justinian reconstructed in the sixth century; one of many links to the Ottoman sultans of the 15th through 19th centuries (notably Suleyman the Magnificent and Ahmet III) is the sprawling Topkapi Palace; Sultan Ahmet I left his distinctive mark by ensuring that the Blue Mosque be unique with six minarets. And these are but a smattering of this city's monuments to its past.
