WASHINGTON (FNS) -- The textile and apparel industries are sitting in on a high-stakes game of regulatory roulette involving formaldehyde. One outcome could spell additional economic hardship for the already beleaguered industries, and another could mean risking cancer for more than a million workers.
Formaldehyde is an omnipresent chemical found in hundreds of products representing 8 pcernt of the Gross National Product. It revolutionized textiles and apparel in the fifties when it was used to create durable press apparel, a feature the industries say now is irreplaceable, and found in a large share of the apparel worn today.
