At the time Alaska was admitted to the Union as the 49th state, a stand-up comedian made a suggestion for keeping our flag to only 48 stars. His solution: "Get rid of Arkansas."
The result was an uprising of Arkansas citizenry unequaled since the Civil War. The people of the "land of opportunity" have a right to their pride. History and geography are on their side.
Arkansas was discovered by Hernando de Soto in 1541. The French took possession in 1682, courtesy of Robert Cavelier, sieur de La Salle. In 1803, the United States purchased Arkansas as part of the Louisiana Territory. Thirty-three years later it became a state.
