The first official match between the Eagle Syndicate's Magic and the Yacht Club Italiano's Victory '83 it did bring out one negative side to the winged keel that helmsmen should take into consideration in the future.
The two boats have been sparring cooperatively off Long Beach, Cal. since late spring, but this was a chance for the boats to square off on a full America's Cup course under the auspices of Long Beach YC. Previously, the boats had been practicing dinghy-style and testing sails against each other.
