Los Angeles, New York get boost from promotions
Heavy promotions in Los Angeles and New York helped retailers post increases last week. Los Angeles stores had a 17 percent rise for the period while New York was aided by a one-day event at one store.
Summer clearances at two Los Angeles stores resulted in 75 and 100 percent gains, respectively, at downtown locations. Categories doing well there included sportswear, jewelry and swimwear. Furs and coats were slow due to warm temperatures.
The New York area gain came to 3.8 percent in the city and 7 percent in the area. One store in the city had a 22 percent increase.
