IN THE BIBLICAL account, a man possessed by evil spirits has been raging around amid the monuments of a cemetery. Jesus relieves the man of the evil spirits and permits them to enter into a nearby herd of swine, whereupon the swine frenziedly plunge over a cliff to their death in the sea.
This rich story is subject to many interpretations. Why a cemetery? Is the man in a spiritual wasteland? And why treat the swine that way? In any case, Jesus gave those swine a literary immortality as a parable of subrational frenzy.
