Applying a formula he learned from a friend in the volume merchandising business, Arco dealer John Spencer has catapulted his gasoline sales from 100,000 gal./month to within a whisker of 1 million gal./month, causing a considerable ruckus in the always turbulent Phoenix market.

"It's a simple formula," he says. "My target is 1% net profit on gross sales. But you have to get the big volumes to make it work."

Spencer says some of his competitors think he's crazy. "Others just hate my guts." In two-and-a-half years, he has boosted his gallonage to the point where he's pumping over 800,000 gal./month that his competitors formerly pumped.
