In a Winter Garden, a recent composition by Libby Larsen, composer in residence with the Minnesota Orchestra, is hopeful to the point of cuddliness. It can be heard on Pro Arte in a finesounding performance by mezzo-soprano Janis Hardy, tenor Dan Dressen and the Plymouth Festival Chorus and Orchestra under Philip Brunelle. Described as "A Choral Work for Advent,' In a Winter Garden has a libretto by Patricia Hampl, whose Prague-obsessed memoir, A Romantic Education, was fresh and sweet but whose work here is treacle. ("Treacle' comes from the Greek theriake, meaning an antidote to the bite of wild beasts; I have my doubts about this antidote.) ...
