FRAMINGHAM, Mass. (FNS) -- Aided by strong results in its specialty stores division, Zayre Corp. posted record results with earnings jumping 22.6 per cent in the third quarter and 21.3 per cent in the nine months ended Oct. 26.
In the quarter, total earnings advanced to $27,687,000, or $1 a share, from $22,584,000, or 84 cents. Earnings a share have been adjusted for the 4-for-3 stock split on May 30.
For the discount department stores, operating income in the quarter increased 9.8 per cent to $31,465,000 from $28,665,000. Operating income for specialty stores rose 39.7 per cent to $32,927,000 from $23,563,000.
