OSHA Gets new Proposals On Formaldehyde Levels

Despite appeals from the textile and apparel industry that reducing formaldehyde levels in the workplace would be expensive and unnecessary, the Occupational Safety and Health Administration Tuesday proposed two alternatives to do just that.

Under pressure from unions who argue that formaldehyde causes cancer, OSHA proposed either a 1 part per million (ppm), or 1.5 ppm workplace exposure standard for formaldehyde.

The scope of the proposal will be decided to a great degree by the cancer danger OSHA decides exists after weighing public comment for the next 90 days.
