WASHINGTON (FNS) -- President Reagan apparently has blocked immediate trade retaliation against Japan regarding their leather product import restrictions, after receiving a letter from Japanese Prime Minister Yasuhiro Nakasone.
A Congressional official, who requested anonymity, said that Nakasone's letter was delivered on Tuesday, prior to a meeting of the president's Economic Policy Council. The letter reportedly asked Reagan to hold off on any reprisals the council was reportedly considering against Japan following the breakdown of talks aimed at liberalizing access to Japan markets by U.S. leather products firms.
